We are Artists!
Art and Design Curriculum Intent
At St Martin’s Catholic Primary School the children will explore and learn about a variety of artwork produced by famous artists and contemporary artists to encourage a love of art and design to inspire their own work.
St Martin’s art and design curriculum has been designed as a spiral style curriculum where each of the following art elements are revisited within each year group.
Line
Shape
3D form and space
Texture
Colour
Pattern
The curriculum has been planned so that the same theme is taught throughout the school at the same time.
Autumn- Line and shape
Spring- 3D form, space and texture
Summer- Colour and pattern
The art and design curriculum has been designed to ensure that all of the year groups follow a progression of skills plan for their key stage.

Lower Key Stage 2
Upper Key Stage 2
The progression of skills plan has been devised to allow the children to explore and develop their own ideas. It encourages evaluation and development of art and design work.
Each key stage progression of skills plan has been designed so that the children use a wide range of materials and techniques.
Drawing
Painting
Printing
Textiles/Collage
3D form
Digital media (cross curricular – Computing lessons).
The Art and Design subject lead is Mrs Forber.
The work produced is presented in folders in EYFS and Year 1 and in sketchbooks in Years 2- 6. Work is also on display both in the corridors and in classrooms with labels to support the children’s knowledge and understanding. A school art and design portfolio displays a wide variety of art and design work produced throughout the school. A PowerPoint slideshow and flipbook with photographs of the portfolio is available for viewing on the school website. The portfolio demonstrates the progression of skills and the wide variety of work produced during art lessons, cross curricular activities, school displays, art exhibitions and art clubs.
